How to Restore Old Photos: A Step-by-Step Guide

The workflow below is ordered so each step protects the next: handle prints safely, digitize at high quality, repair the damage, then optionally fix fading, colorize, and upscale for printing — finishing with proper backups so you never have to do this twice.

Step 1: Gather and handle your prints safely

Work on a clean, dry surface with clean, dry hands — or wear cotton or nitrile gloves — and always hold photos by their edges. Fingerprints on the emulsion are one of the most common self-inflicted types of damage. Keep food and drink away from the workspace, and group prints by size and condition as you go.

Resist every urge to fix the physical photo first: no tape, no glue, no trimming torn edges. Digital restoration is non-destructive and works from exactly the information — including torn edges and stains — that physical repair destroys. If a photo is stuck to album paper or glass, use unwaxed dental floss with a gentle sawing motion to release it; never pull.

Step 2: Digitize at the highest practical quality

The scan sets the ceiling for everything that follows. Use a flatbed scanner rather than a phone photo wherever possible, and scan at 600 DPI in color as the default — even for black and white prints, because color mode captures the stains and yellowing the restoration needs to see. Save the master as TIFF or PNG, and keep the original scan untouched forever; every later step works on a copy.

Step 3: Repair the damage with AI
